Thanksgiving

Keep Thanksgiving turkey on schedule.

Large turkeys need a plan for thawing, oven space, sides and leftovers. Work backwards from the meal time and keep thermometer checks non-negotiable.

Timing guide

Planning numbers.

Use these as a starting point, then check temperature, texture and doneness before serving.

Best starting point Plan from the serving time backwards
Defrosting Allow several days for a large frozen turkey in the fridge
Cooking Cook to a safe centre, not just a browned skin
Rest 30-60 minutes depending on size
Leftovers Cool quickly and refrigerate promptly
Useful next steps

Use the planner as the main schedule, then open side guides if you need extra detail.

Method

Cook it in order.

  1. Confirm the bird weight and whether it is fresh or frozen.
  2. Build a cooking-day schedule with oven time reserved for sides and reheating.
  3. Cook stuffing separately unless you are deliberately planning and checking stuffed-bird timing.
  4. Check the thickest part of the turkey and the centre of any stuffing before serving.
  5. Portion leftovers into shallow containers so they cool quickly.
Avoid

Common mistakes.

Starting thawing too late.

Letting side dishes take the oven when the turkey still needs time.

Leaving leftovers out while everyone keeps grazing.
